TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, Fla. – Tuesday, January 1, 2013)
Mississippi State vs. Northwestern – 12 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are going to a bowl for the 3rd strait year, for the first time since 2000. The Northwestern Wildcats have been to a bowl 7 out of the last 8 seasons. Both of these teams were ranked in the Top 25 at some point in the season, Northwestern currently holds the #20 ranking.. The Bulldogs started out the season winning seven strait games and gaining a #18 national ranking, then lost to Alabama the next game. The Bulldogs also lost their last game to hated rival Ole Miss, the first time this has happened in 3 years, then again to LSU and A&M. The Bulldogs finished the season at 8-4, 4-4 in the SEC. Northwestern began the year looking good beating 7-5, 5-2 Syracuse on the
road 42-41 and downing 2-10, 1-7 Boston College and 8-4, 5-3 Vanderbilt
at home, but then falling to No. 18 Michigan 29-28 and against No. 16 Nebraska 38-31 in overtime. The Wildcats finished the season at 9-3, 5-3 in the Big 10. MSU is favored by 2.5, but they haven't really beat anyone that is very good. I like Northwestern in this game, probably by a slim margin. I just haven't seen anything this season that makes me think MSU can get it done.
